We round up the past week’s news and updates from the world of Nuclear.
GIF calls for nuclear’s inclusion in COP26 discussions, from World Nuclear News: “All realistic options that might contribute to global net-zero must be considered, the Generation IV International Forum (GIF) has said in an open letter to COP26 President Alok Sharma. Nuclear systems and advanced reactors – such as Generation IV systems – can contribute to a net-zero society alongside renewable energies, it says.”
Government pledges £1.7bn of public money to new nuclear plant, from The Guardian: “The government will make its first direct investment in a large-scale nuclear reactor since 1995 after pledging to plough up to £1.7bn of taxpayers’ money into a new power plant. Treasury documents published alongside the autumn statement did not name which nuclear project would be in line for the public funds, but the Guardian understands it is most likely to be the planned £20bn Sizewell C plant in Suffolk.”
Nuclear energy helped prevent 72 billion tonnes CO2 emissions since 1970, from Down To Earth: “Nuclear reactors worldwide have helped avoid the emission of 72 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide since 1970, compared to coal-fired electricity generation, according to a new report. Nuclear reactors generated a total of 2,553 terawatt-hour (TWh) in 2020, down from 2,657 TWh in 2019, showed the report released days ahead of the 26th Conference of Parties (CoP26) To the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.”
A Newcomer to Nuclear Power, UAE Has Showcase Facility in Barakah, from Power Magazine: “Creating a nuclear power program in a country that is new to the industry requires a lot of work, but it helps to have some experienced support. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) found good partners and put in the time to develop a world-class program. The result is an award-winning plant that will provide reliable power for decades to come.”
Westinghouse micro-reactor feasible option for Canada, study finds, from World Nuclear News: “The eVinci micro-reactor can provide necessary, clean and cost-competitive energy to decentralised, off-grid markets in Canada, a feasibility report prepared by Bruce Power and Westinghouse has found… A 12-page executive summary, providing a market overview of opportunities for the deployment of the reactor in Canada, its benefits and opportunities, has been shared by the companies.”
